Sea Glass, a 248 page novel by Laurence Yep*, is about a boy named Craig who is forced to move to Conception from his home in Chinatown. When he arrives in Conception he is singled out to be "Chinese" and no one wants to be his friend. His father tells him to earn Westerners respect and friendship he had to be good at sports, like he himself was. He meets his grandfather delivering groceries and relizes that his father only wants him to do sports because that is how he "fit in".Craig is not good at sports but, earns friends by trying and being himself and in the end he has all a kid ever needs, friendship and the love of his parents. such a good book. Yep is a good writer for middle school kids because life, as portrayed in his books, is NOT all rosy.
